TAP Dance Master Class

Tuesday, April 14th TERRIFIC Class! Thank you!

Ryan Lohoff is a tap dancer, choreographer, educator, and creative entrepreneur whose career spans television, film, live performance, and arts education. With more than 35 years of dance training and over 20 years teaching internationally, Ryan has built a reputation as an innovative voice in the tap dance community.

He is the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Tap Into The Network (TITN), an organization dedicated to fostering collaboration, mentorship, and artistic development through intensives, live productions, and community-driven events. Through TITN, Ryan has helped cultivate opportunities for dancers to train, perform, and connect with artists from across the tap world.

Ryan’s professional credits include choreographing for NBC’s World of Dance and appearing on Paula Abdul’s Live to Dance, as well as performances on FOX’s 30 Seconds to Fame and Mobbed. His rhythmic work has also been featured in film, providing tap sounds for Disney’s The Princess and the Frog and MGM’s Fame.

As an artist, Ryan approaches tap dance much like a musician in an ensemble—balancing sound and silence while exploring tempo, dynamics, and phrasing. In the classroom, he is known for incorporating diverse musical styles and bringing humor and energy to the learning process, encouraging dancers to embrace creativity and enjoy the journey of growth.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?
I would say that as an artist, I have a unique voice and approach to my musicality, movement and choreography. I lean more towards an accompanist rather than the lead instrument or vocalist when creating to music. I enjoy the balance of giving space for silence as much as creating sound. I strive to think about what I want to see and hear when it comes to creating choreography. A lot of tap dancers focus on primarily sounds. I’m also not afraid to push boundaries with tempo and dynamics.
What do you bring to a dance class and want to share with people?
What’s always inspired me most during class is the music. It was a pivotal moment in my life as a dancer when I was introduced to tap dancing to alternative styles of music other than the stereotypical broadway, swing, or jazz style of tap. Mad respect for it…but I am just emotionally moved by different music than the traditional. Being that this was such an important thing to me, I enjoy using all genres of music during my classes. Additionally, I bring laughter to the dance floor. I was taught that if you’re not enjoying the process then you’re doing it wrong. By incorporating comedy and laughter, I am able to distract from the frustrations that often come with learning and training in tap dance. Whether you execute every step perfectly or miss every sound, to each their own in their own time. Instead, we learn to embrace our struggles with a laugh and enjoy the moment we share together in the classroom.
